Crossover between polariton and phonon local states . Anisotropy - induced localization threshold

چکیده

We consider the impurity-induced polariton local states in a dipole-active medium. These states present the local optical vibrations which are coherently coupled with the induced electromagnetic field. We show that the crossover between the polariton and phonon local states takes place within the relativistically narrow interval near the bottom of the polariton gap. However, the resonant phonon-photon interaction leads to the absence of the lower threshold of the impurity strength. These results are due to the singularity of the density of the polariton states, which is generic for any isotropic dipole-active phonon mode with the negative dispersion. We show that a weak anisotropy removes this singularity and sets a finite threshold for the local polariton states. Typeset using REVTEX 1

Tunable local polariton modes in semiconductors

We study the local states within the polariton band gap that arise due to deep defect centers with strong electron-phonon coupling. Electron transitions involving deep levels may result in alteration of local elastic constants. In this case, substantial reversible transformations of the impurity polariton density of states occur, which include the appearance/disappearance of the polariton impur...

Disorder-induced polaritons

We consider phonon polariton states which may arise in disordered dielectrics due to a random light-phonon coupling. We show that these states can be described within the model of disorder-induced crossing resonance (DICR). The dispersion laws and relaxation rates of these states have been explored. Polaritons are shown to be good candidates for the experimental observation of the effects of DI...

Local Polariton States in Polar Crystals with Impurities

We show that an impurity embedded in an ionic crystal can give rise to a novel kind of local states. These states exist within a polariton gap of a material and are a mix of excitations of the crystal, such as phonons or excitons, and the transverse electromagnetic field. Electromagnetic component of the states along with the corresponding excitations of the material are localized in the vicini...

The coupled non–radiative excitations of the electromagnetic field and pha-sons in films with a quasi one–dimensional charge density wave (CDW) are evaluated for P–polarization and CDW conducting axis inside the film. The prominent features are two surface phason–polariton branches extending from the CDW pinning frequency to the frequency of the longitudinal optical phason. These surface phason...

Phonon-polariton excitations in photonic crystals

The incorporation of materials which exhibit transverse phonon-polariton excitations into a photonic crystal produces an intricate optical system possessing unique and varied photon phenomena. In particular, we demonstrate theoretically that such a system will exhibit both near-dispersionless bands with field localization in the polaritonic material and metalliclike bands with complete flux exp...
